Gilad Atzmon: Witness for the Defense
Gilad Atzmon--the jazz musician and anti-semitic/anti-Israel activist--has popped up in the news again.
Sylvia Stolz, the Holocaust-denying lawyer who defended Holocaust revisionist "scholar" Ernst Zundel was just sentenced by a German court to 3 1/2 years in prison. She has also been banned by the court from practicing law for five years.
Iran's PressTV (of all places) has this report:
During the trial of the Holocaust revisionist scholar, Ernst Zundel , Stolz called the Holocaust "the biggest lie in world history".
Stolz has reportedly read a newspaper article to the court about the appearance of world renowned Israeli artist, Gilad Atzmon in Bochum.
In a public statement, Atzmon is quoted as having said that the written history of the Second World War and the Holocaust are a "complete forgery, initiated by Americans and Zionists".
Atzmon has a history of distributing Holocaust denial literature, and of endorsing Holocaust revisionists. Of course, he angrily denies that he himself is a Holocaust denier.
I found myself curious about the source of this Atzmon quote, which I have never seen before. (Stoltz used the same quote while defending neo-Nazi Rigolf Hennig in 2006.)
After much searching, I found it: In 2005, a local newspaper, Ruhr Nachrichten, reported on his lively performance in Bochum, Germany:
What followed was a heated debate...during which several spectators left the room in protest. Atzmon described the known history of the Second World War and the Holocaust as a whole, as a forgery initiated by Americans and Zionists....Particularly fierce debate erupted as Atzmon argued that there is "no forensic evidence" that the number of Jews killed during the Holocaust is really six million.

Either you are ignorant or you are dishonest (though it is not out of the question you may be both). Sorry, but no, most serious scholars don't "agree that the 6 million figure is high." Most serious people do agree that Gilad Atzmon is an anti-semite, however, and that Counterpunch is by no means a credible source.
Atzmon has long played his game of tickling the dragon's tail, trying to see how close he can get to purely anti-semitic rhetoric while still offering just enough wiggle room to be able to say, "no, no, I'm not like *those* anti-semites." And now he's miscalculated, and none of his quick, high-stepping dance is going to get him out of the path of the dragon he tickled awake.

In any event, since Mr. Buttery can be found on the internet rushing to the defence of antisemitic racists like Israel Shamir and publicity seeking Hizb'allah apologist blowhard Norman Finkelstein, it's hardly surprising that he would turn up here to defend the antisemite racist Gilad Atzmon. Now that Bobby Fischer has died, no doubt Buttrey will have plenty of work cut out for him rushing to defend that mentally deranged figure's hatred of Jews.
Gilad Atzmon is no holocaust denier. He acknowledges the jewish holocaust of the 1940s and points out that we should have learnt the lessons from it, to ensure it never happens again. Yet it has happened again, many times, and is still happening, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and the real problem his zionist and crypto-zionist attackers have with him is that he doesn't deny those holocausts. He presents a message of universal humanism and empathy with the Palestinians, and reaches thousands of people every month, despite many attempts to shut him up by the zio gatekeepers.

To present a defense in Germany is now a crime in itself. It is a joke and at the same time a tragedy for freedom of speech, welcomed ONLY by the deniers of the genocides happening around the world, much of which is at the behest of Israel.

Oh, pass me the barf bag! The preoccupation of Sands and other Zionists and crypto-zionists with "the Holocaust" is utterly pornographic, and contrived as a smokescreen to divert the world's attention away from what is happening on the ground in Palestine, where there is no food or potable water, and a humanitarian crisis of a huge magnitude is unfolding. The Israeli occupation forces have sealed all checkpoints into Gaza now, allowing nothing, including food supplies in, and no-one out, and are carrying out daily airstrikes against the population imprisoned inside this concentration camp, a million and a half people. Half the Strip's residents have no access to clean water since fuel supplies were cut off.

The "crypto-Zionist" thing is lovely. See, the standard party line among anti-semites trying to pass for "progressive anti-Zionists" is that anybody who sees through the mask and accuses them of anti-semitism is really just a Zionist trying to raise what knuckles calls a "smokescreen."
The problem is, that boilerplate lie falls apart when the people calling the anti-semites' bluff are obviously anti-Zionist themselves.
So what do defenders of the likes of Eisen and Atzmon do? Simple -- they resort to vapid language games. Think Atzmon's an antisemite? Then you're either a "Zionist or a crypto-Zionist," even if you've been an anti-Zionist campaigner for decades.
Now, that sophistry's enough to convince a deep-thinking genius like Knuckles. But then, apparently the sophistry of the Holocaust denier Paul Eisen is also enough to convince the deep-thinking genius Knuckles, so it doesn't seem to be a very high bar to vault.
What is disturbing is not Zundel's Holocaust denial or Atzmon's equivocation in the area. They are FRINGE individuals with zero influence on world events.
What is disturbing is that anyone should be sent to prison for saying that the Holocaust didn't happen. Not for killing Jews, not for harming them, not for advocating another Holocaust -- just for saying that it didn't happen.
And it's disturbing because it's the State denying the existence of intelligence on the part of the citizenry. It's the State assuming that if the deniers are allowed to speak, the people won't be able to detect their lies, and for that reason they need some big-brotherish help from the government, lest they begin to believe in Holocaust denial.
Shame on Germany, Austria, France and all the other countries where it's illegal to deny the Holocaust (although, for some mysterious reason, it's perfectly legal to deny the Tutsi Genocide, the Ucrainian famine or the mass murders of Pol Pot). By curtailing freedom and insulting the people's intelligence they end up playing into the deniers' hands and giving them a publicity they would never have dreamt of otherwise.
