The Joke's On Mearsheimer
Stephen Colbert wonderfully skewers Mearsheimer over at Comedy Central.
Among my favorite moments:
• After Mearsheimer goes through his usual list of caveats and disclaimers about his thesis, without missing a beat Colbert responds: "What I’m hearing is….Jews control our foreign policy."
• Commenting on the book cover, which merges the Israeli and American flags, Colbert asks: "Was that your idea, or did the Israel Lobby get to your publisher?"
• Colbert wonders: "How do they influence United States policy to make the United States the largest single supplier of arms - to Saudi Arabia?"
• And when Mearsheimer says for the tenth time that the Lobby is not pernicious, Colbert replies: "If the Israel Lobby is not pernicious, would you describe this book as something of a valentine to the lobby?"
Meanwhile, I see that Walt and Mearsheimer will be addressing the House of Lords when they take their world tour to London. I'm sure they'll get a much more respectful reception there than from Colbert--especially since they'll be following on the heels of the "esteemed" speaker Israel Shamir.
